• Minimum cumulative 2.0 grade point average and a 2.0 grade point average in the technical area.
• Successfully completed at least 30 to 45 credit hours based on faculty discretion, 8 of which must be in the student's main area of study, and approval of a technical faculty member.
• Successfully completed EBE 2980, the prerequisite one credit-hour online seminar. This can be taken as a co-requisite upon approval of the technical faculty member.
• At a minimum, each student is required to meet with the assigned technical faculty member at the beginning of the term, at the midterm, and at the end of the term to discuss and evaluate progress.
• Each student must document the learning objectives to be achieved through the experience.

One credit shall be awarded for a minimum of one hundred fifty clock hours of internship work experience that is scheduled during a semester. A maximum of nine semester credit hours may be earned in internship work experience, or any combination of internship work experience, field experience, and practicum, over the associate degree program.

The technical faculty member visits the job site for a conference with the student and supervisor at the midterm and for a final evaluation. Additional visits may occur. The technical faculty member will evaluate the student based upon pre-approved learning objectives to be determined between the student, the technical faculty member, and the supervisor/employer, along with the employer's evaluation of the student. Students participating in an internship will be graded by the assigned faculty member.

Students desiring to participate in an internship will enroll in a prerequisite one-credit seminar, EBE 2980. This can be taken as a co-requisite upon approval of the technical faculty member. The seminar is currently online as a one-credit hour, 8-week course. This course is offered twice during the fall and spring and once during the summer. The seminar's curriculum will encompass the following topics:

• Developing a résumé, cover letter, reference page, and thank you note
• Developing learning objectives for an internship
• Expectations of students participating in an internship
• Workplace ethics
• Interviewing tips and techniques

While internship experiences enhance a student’s career opportunities, no student is guaranteed an internship experience or a job at the end of their internship.

The internship coordinator and faculty advisor are available to assist you. However, your immediate work supervisor at the job site may also be able to help you. If you feel uncomfortable discussing a problem with your supervisor, be sure to contact your technical faculty member or internship coordinator for assistance. You may also need to look into your employer’s policies and procedures for the appropriate course of action.

Your employer will have information and procedures to follow in the event of an on-the-job injury. If this information is not provided to you during orientation, ask your supervisor for the company’s policies and procedures.

If injured, alert your supervisor as soon as possible. Contact the internship coordinator as soon as possible. Since you are a regular employee, contact your employer about any workers’ compensation, including the name(s) and location(s) of the medical providers designated by your employer.

Sometimes, economic conditions may cause an employer to terminate your employment before your internship is completed. Internship students are not regular employees, which means that they are not protected from layoffs. As soon as you are notified of a layoff, contact the internship coordinator.

Terra State Community College does not tolerate any form of discrimination against students, on- or off-campus. Although the internship coordinator makes reasonable efforts to insure that internship work sites are free from discriminatory practices, students may still experience illegal and unethical behavior in the workplace. If you feel that you have experienced unfair treatment based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, or veteran status, you should contact your faculty member or internship coordinator. Arrangements will be made if you are unable to discuss these matters during normal business hours. Discussions are confidential until you authorize disclosure.

Once notified of such an experience, the internship coordinator will try to resolve the problem. No action will be decided upon without your input.

This information will help the internship coordinator to determine whether or not other students should complete an internship with that employer.

Sexual harassment is a form of gender discrimination. This is a serious form of discrimination.

There are two types of sexual harassment: quid pro quo and hostile environments. As defined by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Quid pro quo occurs when "submission to or rejection of [unwelcome sexual] conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individual." Hostile environment is when “unwelcome sexual conduct unreasonably interfere[es] with an individual's job performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment."

If you feel that you are a victim of sexual harassment during your internship, contact the internship coordinator immediately. The internship coordinator will work to resolve the problem. Just like any other form of discrimination, discussions are confidential until you authorize disclosure and no action will be taken without your input.

This information will allow the internship coordinator to determine whether or not other students should complete a internship with that employer.

Employers may discharge you for many reasons, including:

• Unsatisfactory performance
• Irregular attendance, tardiness
• Unacceptable attitude or behavior
• Inability to complete tasks

Employers are encouraged to contact the internship coordinator prior to employment actions. The office will work with the employer and the student to resolve any issues.

If you are discharged, contact your internship coordinator immediately.

If you leave an internship position without the internship coordinator’s approval, you may be subject to disciplinary action.

There are paid and unpaid internships. There is no guarantee a student will be compensated for an internship.

Employers are required by law to provide reasonable accommodation for the physical or mental limitations of a qualified person with disabilities. If a reasonable accommodation is needed in order to apply for an internship position or to perform essential job functions, it is your responsibility to inform your prospective employer and the internship coordinator that an accommodation is needed.
