Medical Assisting Certificate

This certificate is designed to train students to assist physicians in a variety of practice settings. Students learn office skills associated with the medical profession and will be eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification examination upon successful completion of the curriculum. Certificate credits may also be applied to an appropriate associate degree.

Terra State Community College’s Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Program Goals and Outcomes

Demonstrate competency in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains required of an entry-level medical assistant.
Perform administrative medical assisting procedures accurately, safely, and professionally.
Perform clinical medical assisting procedures using appropriate infection control and patient safety practices.
Apply medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and pathology knowledge in patient care settings.
Demonstrate effective verbal, written, and nonverbal communication with patients, providers, and healthcare teams.
Maintain professionalism, ethical behavior, and legal compliance, including HIPAA and OSHA standards.
Demonstrate competency in medical office management, electronic health records, coding, billing, and scheduling procedures.
Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations in ambulatory healthcare settings.
Demonstrate medication administration and dosage calculation skills within the medical assistant's scope of practice.
Successfully complete a supervised practicum/externship demonstrating entry-level readiness for employment.
Prepare for and participate in a national credentialing examination such as the CMA (AAMA).
