From a 4-year degree to a 2-year degree to Registered Nurse at Firelands Regional Medical Center

Coming from a family that had many nurses as members, Ashlea Harper may have been preordained to follow the family tradition. The Fremont Ross graduate always had a passion for helping others and wanted to pursue a career in the healthcare industry, so it only seemed natural to become a nurse.

Ashlea was first introduced to Terra State Community College while in high school. She took part in the College Credit Plus (CCP) initiative that allows high school students to attend Terra State and earn college credit while still in high school. After graduating from Fremont Ross, Ashlea headed to Bowling Green State University for a four-year degree, but returned after graduating to Terra State for her nursing degree. “Terra State has one of the best nursing programs in the state,” she says.

Returning to Terra State after attending Bowling Green State University led to a great experience for Ashlea. “My classroom experience was awesome! I excelled at Terra State because of the small class size and family oriented atmosphere. It made a huge difference coming from a bigger campus at Bowling Green.” Ashlea earned her Associate in Nursing in 2017.

Ashlea now holds two nursing positions. She is an RN at Heritage Village in Clyde and in the Progressive Care Unit at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky. “I got my foot in the door because Terra State does a clinical at Firelands which I did my last semester.”

For anyone looking to join Ashlea in the nursing ranks, she says, “Keep pushing and keep on going. Once you start, it seems like it will never end, but you will make it and it is worth it. Terra State is a great place to get your degree because of the small class sizes and the great instructors who will help you along the way.”
